Pool Maintenance Tasks for the Fall Season

Pool Maintenance Tasks for the Fall Season

Here are pool maintenance tasks worth doing this autumn.

As we roll into the fall months, you may think there’s less to think about when it comes to your pool. If you have a pool heater, you might still be squeezing some comfortable enjoyment out of your pool, but it’s also likely starting to wind down. However, just because it’s fall doesn’t mean there aren’t pool maintenance tasks to be aware of.

That’s right: pool maintenance. We know, we know: you got a pool to have fun and kick back. But there will always be a bit of responsibility associated with anything as enjoyable as pool ownership. We’ll make this easy with this list of pool maintenance tasks worth doing this autumn.

Remove Leaves & Debris

In the fall, it becomes even more important than normal to skim your pool for leaves and other debris. That orange and yellow foliage might look nice, but eventually, leaves will fall, make their way into your pool, and cause your pool water to turn green due to algae growth. In turn, that algae may stain the bottom and sides of your pool. An easy pool maintenance task: skim your pool and clean your skimmer baskets regularly.

Cover Up

If you want to help prevent some of the problems that come around during the colder months while your pool isn’t in use, use a pool cover. Pool covers help cut down on how often you need to clean, prevent water evaporation, and prevent other environmental problems that could have adverse reactions to pool water’s chlorine. Pool covers can even give your pool an extra sense of safety during off-seasons.

Clean Out Your Filter

Make sure your pool filter is up to par, as it’s likely going to have to struggle more than usual due to colder temperatures and additional debris making its way into your pool system. If you own either a sand or diatomaceous earth (DE) filter, you can perform simple backwashing. Cartridge filters may need to be cleaned or outright replaced if they’re dirty enough.

Fix Any Cracks

If you’ve developed cracks in your pool deck, now is a good time to get them sealed and repaired. Don’t let more damage build up, which will be the case as temperatures drop and moisture in those cracks can freeze and then expand, causing more damage.

Final Touches

Make sure you’re skimming the very bottom of your pool as well. If that’s not a job you want to do, get an automatic pool cleaner or invest in a pool maintenance company.
