What You Might Consider When Designing a Pool for Your Family

What You Might Consider When Designing a Pool for Your Family

The following considerations are important ones for a pool that is intended for families with children.

With cooler temperatures around this time, it might seem like a weird time to be thinking about pools, but the truth is that the fall is the perfect time to plan your pool installation so that it is ready for next summer. Choosing to add a pool to your property is a great choice for increasing property value, improving your health and fitness options, and generally adding to the fun of your home. The process includes a lot of choices, however, especially if you’re designing a pool with a family in mind. The following considerations are important ones for a pool that is intended for families with children.

Depth Variation

Make sure you’re designing the pool with the height of your smallest family members in mind. For safety, there should be an area where the water is shallow so that kids can have their feet on the bottom and their heads above water when they need a rest.

Steps and Ledges

Steps and ledges can be essential for novice swimmers. Many designs include a sitting ledge that runs the entire perimeter. The sitting ledge can become a great place to relax, and it also gives swimmers an easier way to climb out of the pool without having to get to the ladder or steps. Newer designs also often include steps that are wider than standard steps. This gives younger kids more room to paddle around without going into deeper water.

Toy Storage

Having a pool and kids means there will be pool toys, and those toys will almost always be wet. Storing them in the house is simply not a reasonable expectation. Plan some sort of toy storage area outside, perhaps under your porch or in a small shed. Make sure the kids know that putting their toys away after swimming every time is part of their job so that you don’t have to add that to your own plate.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Remember that cleaning and maintenance tasks are still going to be part of the reality of pool ownership, but there are ways to make it easier. Choosing a design with smooth walls and a consistent, simple shape can make cleaning it easier and also makes it easier for a robot pool vacuum to keep the pool clean as well.
