Why Too Much Chlorine is Bad For Your Pool, and How You Can Fix The Problem

Some may not believe this to be too problematic, but too much chlorine actually can be a big issue – fortunately, there are things you can do to fix it.

Plenty of effort goes into keeping a pool maintained, and for many people, the most stressful part of pool maintenance is getting all of the chemicals right. The most recognizable chemical in the pool industry is chlorine, and at one point or another, nearly every pool owner has added too much of it to their pool. Some may not believe this to be too problematic, but too much chlorine actually can be a big issue – fortunately, there are things you can do to fix it.

Dangers Of Too Much Chlorine

At high enough volumes, this chemical can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. For asthmatics, this is especially dangerous as it can trigger an asthma attack. High chlorine levels can also be dangerous for your pool since elevated levels of it make the pool water more acidic and more likely to corrode metal surfaces of piping, equipment, and accessories.

Detecting Chlorine

Excessive chlorine has a noticeable smell and feel for most pool owners, but you can’t know exactly how high the chlorine level is without a test. The test is quick and easy using a chlorine test strip system that is readily available at pool supply stores. The strips can read the chlorine levels simply by being dipped into the water by hand (up to your elbow) and compared to a color chart on the bottle.

Removing Chlorine

Chlorine naturally dissipates from your pool over time, so if your levels aren’t too high, you could just let it sit for a while. Obviously, while you’re waiting, you should not add any more chlorine to the pool. Weather can also help neutralize the chlorine: sunlight will make it break down more quickly, and rainwater will help dilute it. Keep in mind that excessive rain, like replacing pool water, can throw off other pool chemicals.  If you’re in need of a fast-acting solution, you could add chlorine-neutralizing chemicals and products on the market.
