Pool Chemicals That Are Commonly Used

Maintenance is an essential part of pool ownership, and that often includes using pool chemicals.

It can be easy to become overwhelmed by the number of products out there for keeping your pool maintained, including all kinds of chemicals that you may not fully understand. Maintenance is essential to pool ownership, and that often includes using chemical agents. While clear water may ease your mind, remember that some microorganisms aren’t visible but can still cause serious issues. Here, we look at the various popular pool chemicals and examine their uses so you can become a better pool owner.

1. Chlorine

You know it, you love it: classic chlorine is one of the most common pool chemicals out there. It’s essential in eliminating many of the pathogens that we see in pools. It’s also affordable, easy to use, and widely available.

There are different kinds of chlorine, though. Trichlor is ideal for continuous maintenance of your pool water via a powder or tablet. Many use the tablets with a chlorinator, which does all the work for you, provided you continue to add tablets and keep the system running. Dichlor is used for heavy-duty situations, such as periods of neglect, after many people have used the pool, or following extreme weather.

2. Muriatic Acid

Pool chemicals should always be handled with care, but this is especially true for muriatic acid. It’s a strong acid that helps control pH levels and is used for specific cleaning applications, but typically you see it being used to lower the pH levels of your pool. If you test your pool’s pH and it’s higher than 7.8, you may want to circulate some muriatic acid (the dose can range from a cup for small pools to ΒΌ gallon for larger pools) and retest until your pH levels are ideal.

3. Borates

You may not have heard of borates before, but they’re essential pool chemicals that help stabilize pH levels. Not only that, but they can also tolerate higher water temperatures, making them great for heated pools or even hot tubs too. Borates help prevent algae, can leave you with softer water, and cut down on your use of chlorine.
